Last week we hosted an afternoon for our studio team @materialsource with a series of CPD sessions and group discussion.

The first session by Howdens provided a critical overview of Insurance supporting Architecture Practice. Focussing on limiting liability and risk management when reading and engaging with appointments and project contracts.

Our own @clairemcginley , offered insight on the Planning System, key Planning Policy in Scotland impacting our approach to building design and placemaking locally and nationally.

Lastly Russwood shared an exciting overview of a range of their sustainable timber products and the opportunities available to us in timber construction.

Thank you @materialsource for providing a great venue, and to @howdeninsurance and @russwooduk for their time and experienced insight.

We are pleased to share the Planning Application a

We are pleased to share the Planning Application and associated Listed Building Consent Application for the refurbishment of the Grade B Listed Building at Unite Students’ Merchant City House have been consented by Glasgow City Council.

Set within Glasgow’s Central Conservation Area, proposals include the sensitive refurbishment of internal spaces, restoring original decoration, and minor external alterations. Working with our Client, The Unite Group, detailed design work is continuing to progress to best inform our overall retrofit strategy.

We look forward to seeing the works commence in the coming months!

Grassroots football in Scotland plays a hugely important role in nurturing young talent, fostering community spirit, and promoting physical and mental well-being. It provides young players with opportunities to develop core skills, instils discipline, and strengthens local identity. Crucially, it serves as the foundation for Scotland’s footballing future, inspiring the next generation of professionals.

This season, we’re pleased to be supporting the 2016/2015 squad @inspirefutbolscotland – a talented group of lads, all with very bright futures ahead of them.

A few of the team recently took a trip to see Moda, Holland Park in Glasgow.

As architects, it is always hugely rewarding to see a finished project, and from the rooftop garden, Holland Park was looking fantastic in the sunshine!

Moda, Holland Park, which recently won the @scottishpropertyawards BTR Development of the Year, spans an entire city block, with four interconnected buildings ranging from 3 to 17 storeys around a hidden public courtyard, creating an urban oasis.

Metzsein Architecture Discourse

Last week, a few of us attended the Royal Scottish Academy’s Metzsein Architecture Discourse presented by Peter Barber. Peter’s practice has won numerous architectural awards, addressing issues such as homelessness and the availability of social housing. His insightful lecture covered his wide range of projects and aspirations as an architect to developing people centred design. We were particularly intrigued by the practices design process including handcrafted models and sketches.

Recently our own Chloé Docherty visited Moray Mews, completed 2017. The project is a collection of eight fantastic courtyard houses, laid out across a cobbled mews. The development uses a variety of levels to create intrigue, welcoming residents into sun trapped courtyards, open plan living areas and beautiful green roof terraces. Furthermore, expressed details such as timber screens and overhanging windows create an amazingly fascinating street, in which one is invited to explore and inhabit.

International Women’s Day 2025

Over the weekend we celebrated International Women’s Day.

Reflecting on women in architecture, we have been discussing the work and prominence of Edith Burnett Hughes.

Edith, born in Edinburgh, was the niece of the famous Glasgow architect Sir John Burnett. However independently she is largely known as Britain’s first female practicing architect, establishing her own practice in 1920. Throughout her career Edith often received push back from the RIBA and RIAS. In 1927 she was nominated for admittance into the RIBA by several academics however the organisation refused her nomination.

Edith was also head of the Glasgow School of Architecture at the art school and was eventually elected an Honorary Fellow of the RIAS in 1968, after they too failed to admit her earlier in her career. She is most famously known for engaging on work related to Edinburgh’s St Mary Episcopal Cathedral as well as designing the Coatbridge War Memorial and the Mercat Cross in Glasgow.

International Women’s Day aims to celebrate the social, economic and cultural achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action to continue accelerating women’s equality. We are pleased to see that a century on architecture continues to become a more diverse, inclusive and innovative industry.

GLASGOW | VENICE Associate Claire recently trave

GLASGOW | VENICE

Associate Claire recently travelled to Venice. Reflecting on the trip, Claire discussed Glasgow architectures surprising links to famous works throughout Venice including the Doge’s Palace and Ca’d’Oro.

The Templeton Carpet Factory, completed in 1892, famously drew inspiration from the Doge’s Palace, Venice. After multiple planning rejections architect William Leiper was appointed to design a façade so prestigious it could never be refused. His result was a stunning gothic revival façade overlooking Glasgow Green.

The CA’D’ORO in Glasgow, another equally famous building, was designed by John Honeyman. Honeyman’s work featured detailed cast iron decoration. However, although inspired by venetian architecture, comparisons to the famous Ca’d’Oro in Venice gave the Union Street building its name. Ca’d’Oro, also known as House of Gold or Golden House, is one of the most recognisable examples of venetian gothic architecture in Venice.

Count down begins to this week’s Scottish Property Awards and our completed residential community, Holland Park, on behalf of @livethemodalife , named as finalist in both the Architectural Excellence Award and the Build to Rent Development of the Year.

We’re looking forward to an evening with colleagues and friends celebrating the collaborative effort of all those involved in this landmark project for Glasgow. Our fingers are crossed too…!
