Renders to reality...

Watching a design come to life is deeply rewarding. From initial sketches it requires the collective efforts of hundreds of people from the client, design team, contractors, statutory authorities, product suppliers, manufacturers to individuals on site. Jim Webster and Claire McGinley attended last night’s event, ‘The Human Nature Approach’ organised by Built Environment - Smarter Transformation and hosted by Threesixty Architecture Ltd

The insight from Jonathan Smales, Co-founder & CEO of Human Nature, was a powerful reminder of how thoughtful, design-led placemaking can transform our housing crisis and climate challenge. His vision isn’t just about building homes, it’s about crafting neighbourhoods that feel like a true place to belong: walkable streets, mixed-tenure housing, shared spaces, green public realm and mobility options that don’t rely on cars.

He argued passionately that sustainability doesn’t have to mean sacrifice if we build with natural materials, reuse and repurpose, and design for community and everyday human life, living sustainably can be joyful, beautiful and affordable. Most importantly, he called for “deep collaboration”, bringing together designers, planners, investors and future residents, so places are shaped by people, not just by profit or convention. Realising this at scale, he said, could deliver the kind of “exponentially sustainable” neighbourhoods that our society needs: for people, for planet, for the future.

We can do more, and do it better, but it demands courage, partnership and new ways of working to overcome the barriers.

North Woodside Court - This new build addition to

North Woodside Court - This new build addition to our Napiershall Street site is a contemporary red-brick, L-shaped residential building. Its scale, massing and material palette were carefully calibrated to complement the original sandstone structure of The Old Schoolhouse and the surrounding tenements. The juxtaposition of old and new creates a playful dialogue between the buildings, with the shape and orientation of the new building creating a private internal courtyard to be enjoyed by residents.

The facades were designed to respond to their context. The street-facing elevations are restrained masonry façades, reflecting the building’s public face and incorporating subtle details which celebrate historic elements of The Old Schoolhouse. For example, the sawtooth brick detailing which echoes the form of the original roofscape of the building. In contrast, the courtyard elevations are more open and outward, animated by balconies and large openings that connect living spaces to outdoor amenity areas.

Another great night attending this year’s GIA Award Ceremony and Dinner. We were proud to have 2 shortlisted projects; Greenmarket in Dundee for the office/industrial/commercial/retail category and Napiershall Street School for large residential and the conservation category!

It was a pleasure to be recognised alongside many exceptional projects across Scotland and we are pleased to receive a commendation for Greenmarket! Congratulations to this year’s winners and all fellow participants.

Murray and Jim represented HAUS at last night’s Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Parliamentary Reception in the Thames Pavilion at the House of Commons.

Hosted by Maureen Burke MP and Stuart Patrick Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, the event highlighted the vital role Glasgow’s businesses play in the UK economy and brought MPs and industry leaders together to discuss shared priorities for growth, innovation and investment.

Glasgow still faces challenges in attracting investment, with delays in key projects and extended decision timelines making progress difficult.

But Glasgow is our city and we must keep moving forward or risk further uncertainty and decline.

Napiershall St - The Old Schoolhouse Continued…

Designed in 1900 by prominent Glasgow Architect Robert Alexander Bryden, the former Napiershall Street School is a Victorian sandstone building in the city’s West End. Although unlisted, it holds significant heritage value as a much-loved local landmark. After closing as a school in the 1980s, it was later converted into offices and then used by community groups, but following decades without investment, it fell into serious disrepair and remained derelict for several years.

HAUS Collective led the conservation and adaptive reuse of the building, transforming it into 24 apartments, including four penthouses within a discreet new roofscape. The key objective was to safeguard and celebrate the building's historic character while ensuring it was fit for modern residential use for decades to come.

The restoration sees original features showcased within the main atrium space, previously infilled archways were reopened, the main staircase restored, and ornate balustrades retained. A new rooflight floods the space with daylight, reinstating its role as the social heart of the building.

Naipiershall Street Old School House is complete!

This project included sensitive conservation and adaptive reuse of the former Napiershall Street School, a landmark Victorian sandstone building in Glasgow's West End, accompanied by a contemporary red-brick new build which compliments the traditional character of the school.

The two buildings are arranged to create a dynamic sequence of green spaces, activated at ground level with improved permeability and connection to the streetscape. A generous ‘civic space’ is proposed in front of the Old School House, enhancing its primary façade.

Now fully complete The Old School House once again celebrates its historic character while being fit for modern residential use for years to come.

At Merchant City House, in Glasgow’s Central Conservation Area, HAUS is leading a sensitive restoration of the central atrium and detailing as part of the wider refurbishment of this Category B Listed building.

Projects like this demand critical thinking, precision and creativity at every stage, especially when uncovering the original structure reveals new challenges.

In recent months, our architectural assistants, guided by experienced mentors, have built skills ranging from working with historic building fabric to collaborating with engineers on sensitive, context-aware solutions.
