In-practice experience is a vital step in the education of young architects.

HAUS are again pleased to support the @stratharch Year 2 Introduction to Practice elective, hosting a student within the studio for five weeks. This year we welcome Lano Raza, who will progress her second-year project within a professional practice environment. Lano shared thoughts on her motivation to study architecture and in-practice experience:

"When I first moved abroad, one of the first things that really caught my attention was the architecture. Everything felt different, the way buildings looked, the way they were laid out, even how they made you feel moving through them. That’s when I started to realise just how much design shapes our everyday experiences and our well-being.

Over time, that curiosity slowly turned into a real passion. The more I noticed, the more I wanted to understand why things were designed the way they were, and that’s when I knew architecture was the right path for me. Now, I’m really keen to learn how a professional practice actually works day to day. University gives you a solid foundation, but I’m excited to see how those ideas translate into real projects, and to pick up insights that I can bring back into my own work, both now and in the future.

I’m also looking forward to meeting new people and building connections within architecture. I know this experience will be hugely motivating as I keep working toward my goal of becoming an architect."

For Scotland's national celebration of Robert Burns we had a Burns dinner themed pot luck lunch! Everyone mucked in providing homemade classics from shortbread to neeps and tatties to go with the main event - the haggis. Coming together, toasting to the year ahead and a shared meal warmed the studio, and sae the Lord be thankit!

Our Part 1 Alice embarked on a 4-week journey to C

Our Part 1 Alice embarked on a 4-week journey to Chimaltenango, in Guatemala where she took part in the Mesoamericano Mindfulness Space project run by @caukinstudio in partnership with @risewithmeso . The project entailed the construction of a timber framed pavilion over the course of 8 weeks where volunteers participated and experienced the construction process first hand.

Through problem solving, collaboration with local trades and teamwork Alice’s group were successful in finishing and furnishing the pavilion, producing a peaceful break-out therapy space, rooted in nature, for students at the local school.

What Alice had to say: "What an experience. Taking part in this project was incredible and truly rewarding. Working alongside local workforce and school staff, I learned specialist Guatemalan techniques in fabric dying, and the process of installing a traditional curved clay tile roof. Beyond this I had the opportunity to experience a country and its people from a truly unique perspective, being taken in by the local community and helping create something meaningful to them. This experience will not only influence my outlook and future development in architecture but also my appreciation and understanding of people and place - I would recommend this to anyone looking to gain practical experience and expand their horizons.”

Well done Alice, we are all very proud of your ambition and adventure!

Introducing Chris Stewart, our talented Part 1 Architectural Assistant at HAUS Collective.

· What do you love most about architecture?
I love architecture because it gives me the opportunity to turn my ideas and creativity into spaces that shape how people live, move and feel.

· What’s your favourite building?
The Pantheon in Rome

· What are you looking forward to most on your placement year?
I am most looking forward seeing how architecture works in the real world, taking projects from drawings to built reality and continuing to improve my skills with the help of the team at HAUS.

Chris has also been treating the studio to his delicious chocolate chip banana bread - you've got to be fast to get a slice!

Congratulations to the Association of Dundee Archi

Congratulations to the Association of Dundee Architecture Students ( @adas_dundee ) on their successful campaign to address staffing challenges that threatened the university’s ARB/RIBA accreditation.

In December Elliot and Harriet from HAUS returned to Dundee, their alma mater, as guest reviewers for the Year Two end-of-semester reviews. Both felt it was clear that students had experienced periods without consistent tutorial support, amid the wider pressures facing architectural education nationally. They were struck by the students’ resilience and commitment shown by ADAS in seeking to resolve the challenges faced this academic year.

Encouragingly, as recently reported by @architectsjournal , steps taken by the university and students underline a shared recognition of how vital consistent, experienced teaching is, not only to accreditation, but to the formation of thoughtful, collaborative future practitioners.

At the beginning of any architectural career, the student-tutor relationship is fundamental. It shapes studio culture and underpins the critical exchange through which ideas are tested, challenged and strengthened. As architectural education prepares to face its most significant period of change in decades, strong teaching and mentorship remain more crucial than ever. Without this, there is a real risk that emerging designers are left without the support they need to engage with critique, collaborate effectively, and transition into practice. At HAUS, we care deeply about architectural education and look forward to continued positive momentum at Dundee and beyond.

Good design starts with response to it's context. Our project at the former Kingston Engine works in Glasgow takes lead from the industrial heritage of the Category B listed building and the architectural details that make this building a unique historical artifact and key part of Glasgow's industrial heritage.

From around 1866 to the 1890's the building operated as an industrial workshop manufacturing shipbuilders' and boilermakers' machinery such as the Centrifugal Governor designed by James Weir. As part of the production process a large traveling crane would have occupied the main workshop space which is still retained in part today. The large steel support beams sit exposed on top of brick piers in the main hall giving a glimpse of the buildings industrial history.

Scottish Property Award Finalist ⭐
HAUS has just been named as a finalist for the Architectural Excellence Award (Commercial Use) for our 75,000 sq ft workspace Greenmarket at the @scottishpropertyawards

This newly completed office-led mixed-use development is a landmark design occupying a prominent site in the city centre of Dundee. The project consists of 2 buildings: Building 1 provides flexible office spaces whilst Building 2 offers ideally located student accommodation units. Both buildings respond to the central location and activate the street frontage with commercial units occupying the ground floor. The design reinstates the street edge and provides density whilst respecting the proportions and human scale of its surroundings.

This is an exciting nomination for our team and we're proud to be named amongst so many successful projects across Scotland.
