Heritage projects challenge and inspire our whole studio ✨ while offering our junior team invaluable hands-on experience with historic architecture.

At Merchant City House, in Glasgow’s Central Conservation Area, HAUS is leading a sensitive restoration of the central atrium and detailing as part of the wider refurbishment of this Category B Listed building.

Projects like this demand critical thinking, precision and creativity at every stage, especially when uncovering the original structure reveals new challenges.

In recent months, our architectural assistants, guided by experienced mentors, have built skills ranging from working with historic building fabric to collaborating with engineers on sensitive, context-aware solutions.

📏 Technical Tuesday: Greenmarket, Dundee 📐

Our city-centre project: Greenmarket, Dundee is the result of a carefully composed façade with a robust masonry base below a lightweight metal finish. Broken by a transition zone the two materials are woven together is a subtle reference to Dundee’s historic Jute trade.

At the rear of Greenmarket, the building aims to sensitively respond to the neighbouring richly detailed venetian style tenement. The proposed building façade has evolved through a simplicity of composition and a contemporary aesthetic.

We love seeing our designs become reality.

We had a great morning at the @maggiescentres waving off Jim and the @ride.against.cancer team as they head up to Pitlochry on Day 9 of their Land’s End to John O’ Groats cycle. 💪🏼 🚴🏼

Thank you to Maggie’s for hosting and providing us with a guided tour of the centre. Designed by architecture firm OMA, Maggie’s in Glasgow is one of 24 centres in the UK that offers a range of support those affected by cancer. It was deeply moving to hear how the building’s design has offered comfort to so many during some of life’s most difficult moments. It is Maggie’s ambition to have 30 centres built in the UK by 2030 and this can only be made possible through donations and sharing their story.

So far, Jim and the team have raised an incredible £36,000 which is 70% of their overall goal of £50,000.

HAUS co-founder Jim Webster is getting on his bike again for charity – this time he’s taking on an epic 1,000-mile ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats as part of the Ride Against Cancer team 🚴‍♂️

Like so many of us, each rider in the seven-man strong team has experienced cancer close to home – they are riding in memory of those lost and in support of those still fighting.

The Ride Against Cancer team, from Scotland, England and Wales, are aiming to raise £50,000 for @maggiesglasgow Centres and @younglivesvscancer.

We’re proud to support @ride.against.cancer as an official sponsor and will be supporting Jim and the team all the way!

We’re incredibly proud of @kelly.architecture, who is soon to embark on a four-week journey to Chimaltenango, nestled in Guatemala’s Sierra Madre Mountain range.
Alice will be supporting the construction of a wellbeing and therapy shelter, along with a breakout space for students, at a local school, a project led by the @risewithmeso. She’ll be working hands on throughout the construction phase, collaborating with both local workers and international volunteers to help bring this inspiring project to life.

At HAUS, we’re always seeking meaningful opportunities to grow, connect, and make a difference through design. We can’t wait to hear about Alice’s experiences and the lessons she brings back that will no doubt enrich our design philosophy and practice moving forward.

Napiershall Street - visiting site provides an invaluable opportunity for younger members of our studio team to deepen their understanding of architecture in practice.

Experiencing a live project on site allows them to see how design decisions translate into built form, observe the challenges and problem solving involved in construction, and engage directly with consultants and contractors. It’s a chance to learn beyond the desk, gaining insight from our active Project Architects on materials, detailing, sequencing, and the collaborative nature of the building process.

These visits help bridge the gap between education and real world application, nurturing the next generation of Architects through hands on experience and active participation in project delivery.
