Co-op Auchterarder

A proposed High Street vision for the town of Auchterarder.

HAUS were commissioned to create a High Street vision for the town of Auchterarder. A consideration and analysis of the historic growth of the settlement and its place in a contemporary context informed our approach to creating a diverse, enterprising and self-sufficient town centre.

  • OPPORTUNITY
It is proposed that the bus depot be relocated to an edge of town site in order to create development opportunity.

  • RETAIL
A new 10,000sqft NIA retail unit in place of the bus depot consolidates and enhances the retail offerings of Auchterarder town centre.

  • THE CONNECTING ELEMENT
A shared surface treatment applied to the High Street gives priority to the pedestrian. This surface bleeds beyond the High Street to engage with key civic, education and retail buildings as well as connecting to existing wider core footpaths.

  • THE MARKET SQUARE
There is a future opportunity to use the development of the vacant site as a catalyst for change in the town centre of Auchterarder. The creation of a ‘market square’ can act as a destination at the heart of the existing linear town to provide people with a place to stop and engage.

Through the proposed relocation of the bus depot to a site on the edge of town, the potential is created to re-develop the site as a pivotal intervention that can catalyse positive change across the town centre. A new retail node with associated ‘market square’ would enhance the existing retail offerings of the centre whilst creating a destination point where people can stop and engage. A shared surface is introduced to give power back to the pedestrian and create open space for seasonal markets and events throughout the year, bleeding beyond the High Street to engage with key civic, education and retail buildings as well as connecting to existing wider core footpaths.
